| Hitting a Sour Note
In an interesting turn-around, Lauren Davis receives
tickets to a performance of the New York Philharmonic Symphony and invites
Scott Guber to attend with her. Scott is flattered and accepts the
offer, bringing the wrath of Meredith down on his head. And Lauren's
as well, as his acceptance of the invitation prompts Meredith to pay a
visit to the younger teacher. In the end Scott opts to forgo the musical evening with his former crush,
and eventually tells Meredith that he loves her.
Speech Therapy
Swayed by the feelings of the faculty, Stephen tells Harvey
he would rather not have him
represent Winslow at the finals of the contest, considering that he only made
it by default and managed to embarrass them all terribly at the
regionals. Marla, however, insists that Harvey be given a chance to
redeem himself. And he does so very eloquently, telling all in the
audience that "what teaching means to me" is a steady, if
meager, income for someone who can't afford to retire. But he also
states that once upon a time the profession had great meaning for him,
indeed as it does now for so many of his wonderful younger colleagues who
have a fire and passion in them for imparting knowledge to youngsters.
Lost Souls
An angry and confused Danny Hansen meets with Stephen
about Marla being allowed to lead a Gospel singing group for students in
the school during class hours. When asked why this irks him so much,
he confesses that he no longer knows how to manage separation of church
and state in his classroom, as so many of his students have questions
about God since the terror attacks earlier in the year. And worst
yet, he just doesn't know how to give the kids the answers they are
searching for. Stephen's sage advice to Danny is that teachers are
human, and while they don't have all the answers sometimes just being
there is enough.
Family Secrets
Ronnie has a heart-to-heart with student Melissa
Campbell (Amber Tamblyn)
whom she suspects of throwing herself down the school stairs in an
unsuccessful attempt to miscarry a baby. The young lady refuses to
tell Ronnie who fathered the child, leading the teacher to believe that
something is seriously wrong in Melissa's family. She turns to
Harper, who calls in the parents. It is revealed that Melissa is
carrying her parents' baby as a surrogate so that a kidney can be
harvested for her mother, who is suffering from Lupus. Despite their
insistence that they have done nothing wrong, Social Services separates
the family and places Melissa in a foster home.
